Have done this a twice before, but it was some time ago, just checking if its the same now.

1. 89 days use before Turkcell etc switch it off
2. Take to office/bungalow in Lefkosia and they register it, pay a fee
3. Take to customs office in the new harbour in Girne, they work out the import tax due, pay a fee
4. Take phone with paperwork to Turkcell offices and they register it.

We were able to do it all in one building, on several occasions, as we went in the morning. I've heard that if you go in the afternoon you have to go elsewhere to pay the duty.

What's the tax now my wife's just told me it's gone through the roof . She is just off out to upgrade her phone I said w should look at bringing one from the UK she said the tax has rocketed . I've no idea really just interested .

Haven't a clue, been so busy that I forgot to go, Must do it next week.

Why bother? Just buy a phone here... I recently bought a brand new Samsung Galaxy A24 for £167 in Girne, fabulous specification with Android 14.
Put my SIM in and bingo! No need to bother with import duty and registration etc.

We also bought a new Redmi here not much difference in price to UK

Groucho, Its very easy to be cocky and give your opinions, but some of us or at least members of our family need special phones designed for people with Dementia or Alzheimer. That is the to one to which I refer.

I don't think Groucho was being "cocky", he was just stating facts. There was no previous mention with regards to special needs phones.

If I had to do again i would find a student to come with me and register it as they get better than half price tax

1. Kidnap a student
2. Get them to change their name and appearance to match your passport which has to be produced
3. Wait to be arrested and deported....

Then they thank you for paying them a modest fee for their time and donating a nice new phone to them and paying for its registration, waltz off into the sunset... smiling to themselves at how gullible us old expats can be... after all, without incriminating yourself how can you force them to hand it over?
